SAVE the T.S. HAMBURG of 1969
The T.S. HAMBURG of 1969 deserves preservation in her original home port of Hamburg. She is an historic ship, one of the best examples of the German shipbuilding art in the 1960s, she is mostly still in original form and well maintained, and she was a very successful cruise ship over the last 40 years. As the MAKSIM GORKIY she was the flagship of the Soviet Union mighty passenger ship fleet and she even played her part in the ending of the cold war when Presidents Mikhail Gorbatchov and Bush met onboard on 2 and 3 December 1989 off Malta. She was recently sold for scrap and is on her way to Alang. She needs a proper berth in the centre of the Port of Hamburg

We are deeply sorry to inform the efforts to preserve the MAXIM GORKIY in German waters were unsucessful and the ship was beached in Alang, India, to be broken up for scrap. The HAMBURG / HANSEATIC / MAXIM GORKIY was a wonderful ship. We keep our memories of the white lady and will continue to publish informations, momorabilia and the ship's history here...

These photos were taken from the TRANSTEJO ferry MARVILA, a former HADAG ferry from Hamburg built in 1956 as VOLKSDORF.
ReplyDeleteThe MAXIM GORKIY had to anchor in the river because there were not enough berths for all the cruise ships calling in Lisbon on that particular day. So the GORKY lay at anchor off Trafaria, a small resort on the south bank of the river in front of Algés. The passengers were ferried ashore by the ship's tenders and landed near the TS tower at Algés.
