Few passenger cruise ships have had a more dedicated crew than the MAXIM GORKIY.

She had a Russian national crew up to Alang, and never lost the allure of a true flagship.

In fact she was the Flagship of the Soviet Union merchant fleet up to the end and was always carefully maintained.

In September 2008 when I cruised aboard her it was hard to believe she was 39 year old and yet very close to the original form as HAMBURG in 1969.

Another two photographs of MAXIM GORKIY leaving Funchal, Madeira Island on 1 January 2006. Her modern classic lines are displayed here in a very pleasant way.
This ship should have been preserved in Hamburg. What a sad end in the Alang beach only three years after those shots were registered. This is in fact a strange world unable to preserve beauty. So we shall continue to remember this ship here...

The man behind the creation of Deutsche Atlantik Linie and the construction of their flagship T.S. HAMBURG was Axel Bitsch-Christensen, Mr ABC, a Danish citizen who played an important role in the rebuilding of the Hamburg passenger ship fleet after WW2 and as HAPAG did not seem to be interested in the creation of a new fleet of their own.

"The last barbecue on the Maxim deck en route to Alang.
Many of this last trip crew had been working on Maxim for many years. It’s amazing how the crew took care of the vessel until her very last moments.
It’s also significant that the ship was delivered to India not by an interim Indian crew (as usually made) but by her permanent Russian-Ukrainian crew (reduced to 33 members) , who loved the vessel and served there for many years, even if since late January the ship didn’t have any relation to Sovcomflot and was owned by the Indians. Had the ship been delivered by the Indians, we would never have any information and photos of her last sailing".

Alexandr Lazarev photographed the final renaming of MAXIM GORKIY while the ship lay at the Alang roadstead awaiting beaching.
The name board over the sides near the ship's bridge was carefully modified, showing the great care of her Russian dedicated final crew until the very end.

MAXIM M - Basseterre off Alang

While at anchor off Alang the MAXIM GORKIY was renamed MAXIM M and registered in St. Kitts and Nevis , her final port of registry being Basseterre.
MAXIM's dedicated Russian crew of 33 included one veteran engineer from the original Russian crew who took delivery of the HANSEATIC ex-HAMBURG in Hamburg in January 1974. 35 years earlier.
They kept their beloved ship in pristine condition until the very end.

Dramatic image of the final moments of the MAXIM GORKIY already under her final name of MAXIM M:
"Her last turn from the Alang inner roadstead and the way to the very end, in the warm night of Feb 25, 04-12 am. (Indian time) everything was over. Its GMT + 4.30. So, Maxim was beached on Feb 24, 23-42 (central European time). In Portugal it was 22-42." says Nikolay Prikhodko.

On 20 September 2008 the MAXIM GORKIY sailed from Bremerhaven on her final cruise to Norway and the Fjords, steaming up through the North Sea towards a sunny port of Bergen, Alesund, Vik, Sognefjord, Flam, Aurlandsfjord, Geiranger and Geirangerfjord...
On 26 September the GORKIY berthed at Bremerhaven for her last time, turning around and departing for the Mediterranean and the very last Phoenix Reisen cruises on the former HAMBURG.

The HAMBURG / MAXIM GORKIY was a very special ship and I was lucky to have followed all her career from the maiden cruise to South America in 1969 up to the sad end in Alang.
Probably I would prefer not to see what is on the pipeline in terms of photographs depicting her destruction at the scrap yard, and feel much better looking at her many images including those taken in September 2008 when it was supposed she still had a few years trading as MARCO POLO II.

The MAXIM GORKY looking the perfect ship for one's next cruise, hardly a candidate for the breakers at Alang and that fatal grounding at full speed ahead one final time before she starts to get striped of all fittings and that first fatal cut at the bow. In a matter of weeks her mast will colapse and at one point there will be only a dark rusted hull bottom with no relation to the futuristic and proud liner that slid the slipway in 1968 into the river Elbe waters...
So sad nobody could have been able to save the old HAMBURG.

Unconfirmed reports have been circulating that the MAXIM GORKIY is being beached today, 24 February 2009 at Alang, India, in order to be broken up, following unsucessful atempts to preserve her in Germany.
Further news from Alang indicate she has not yet been beached but is waiting for the right tide to be so. What a shame this final ride to the beach of doom in Alang will coincide with the 40th anniversary of her sea trials and delivery to Deutsch Atlantik Linie in February and March 1969.

Front cover of a brochure published in 1972 by Deutsche Atlantik Linie covering cruises marketed to the German market and operated by HAMBURG and HANSEATIC.
The second ship is pictured in the cover.
It was the final year of joint operation by both ships as in 1973 the HANSEATIC was sold to Home Lines and later on that December the HAMBURG, by then renamed HANSEATIC (III) was withdrawn from service and put on for sale. This brochure was sent by the company from teir Hamburg office with post cards in 1972.

At this time the Soviet Union Merchant Navy flagship was chartered to Neckermann, cruising for the West German market. She still had the black hull line from her original livery as HAMBURG. My friend Holger informs that "Today is the big day of the final countdown for the MAXIM GORKI / HAMBURG. Today there is a meeting between the investors and the people of the city Hamburg.
I hope they find a positive end of this never ending story. The chance to buy this ship is ending today at 15:00. I hope, we'll bring our lady home."

So let's all wish a positive ending to the efforts now underway in Germany, and in many other countries also, in order to give the German / Russian lady a much deserved reprieve.
And I want to visit Hamburg again and be able to stay aboard the Hotel-Schiffe HAMBURG...

During her December 2005 refit in Hamburg, the MAXIM GORKIY was repainted in Phoenix Reisen colours, and afterwards she called in Lisbon on 27 December 2005 while on a Christmas and New Year's cruise, when I took these photographs.
The pictures show the arrival in high tide approaching the Rocha Passenger Terminal.
A Christmas tree can be observed on top of the signals mast.

The MAKSIM GORKIY was the Soviet Union flagship of their passenger ship fleet but spent most of her long career cruising under charter to the German market. She made her first cruise for Neckermann on 21 December 1975 and remained under charter to them until 1988.
